“Graham Pearson Honored with Mineral Namesake”

Renowned diamond explorer and scientist, Graham Pearson, has been honored by having a newly found mineral named after him. The International Mineralogical Association approved the naming of the mineral, Grahampearsonite, after Pearson. This mineral was discovered inside a diamond from Brazil and possesses a chemical composition of calcium, phosphorus, and oxygen.

Pearson, a mantle geochemist at the University of Alberta, has dedicated years to studying mantle geology and mineralogy, particularly focusing on diamonds and their insights into the Earth’s interior. His research in Brazil, dating back over a decade, played a significant role in understanding the composition and water content of the deep mantle through deep-mine diamonds.

Expressing humility, Pearson acknowledged that the lasting impact of a scientist’s work lies in the data produced, but having a mineral named after oneself is a unique and unchanging honor. Grahampearsonite, found within a diamond crystallized at depths exceeding 300 kilometers below the Earth’s surface, was previously known as a synthetic material used in products like toothpaste abrasive. However, its natural occurrence in this diamond marked a groundbreaking discovery.

The mineral’s distinct crystal structure was revealed using X-rays while it was still enclosed within the diamond. An international research team chose to name the prism-like mineral after Pearson in recognition of his exceptional contributions to diamond research. The official naming of Grahampearsonite took place in December.

Pearson’s expertise in diamond research extends to mapping the Earth’s mantle history, developing innovative geochemical analysis techniques, and pioneering geological sample dating methods. Originally from the UK, Pearson’s fascination with diamonds was sparked during his academic journey, leading him to delve into the world of deep Earth studies.

Highlighting the importance of ongoing mineral discoveries, Pearson emphasized the unique properties of natural minerals compared to synthetically produced ones. Diamonds, beyond their sparkle, are invaluable for their capability to retain deep Earth elements and provide insights into plate tectonic processes. With advancing microscope technologies, Pearson believes humanity will eventually uncover all of Earth’s mineral treasures, as there are potentially thousands of minerals yet to be discovered.

Pearson’s dedication to diamond research and mineral exploration continues to shape scientific understanding and pave the way for new discoveries in the field.
