Tragic Ambush: Ghanaian Footballer Killed in Team Bus Attack

Ghanaian Premier League side Berekum Chelsea suffered a tragic loss when their team bus was ambushed by suspected armed robbers, resulting in the death of player Dominic Frimpong, as confirmed by the country’s football association on Monday. The unfortunate incident occurred on Sunday following the team’s match against Samartex in Samreboi, southern Ghana, as detailed in the club’s official statement. Masked individuals armed with guns and assault rifles began firing at the bus while the driver attempted to retreat, prompting players and staff to seek refuge in nearby bushes, the statement recounted. Regrettably, one player sustained severe injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a local medical facility. The Ghanaian Football Association later identified the victim as 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a talented young player who represented the essence of the local football scene. The governing body emphasized its commitment to enhancing security protocols for clubs traveling for domestic matches in light of the incident. It is noted that a similar attack on the bus of another Ghanaian Premier League team, Legon Cities, occurred in 2023, although fortunately, no injuries were reported.
