WestJet has initiated the process of parking its 737 aircraft throughout its network as the possibility of a strike by the airline’s flight attendants looms nearer. This action is aimed at preventing passengers and planes from being stranded in foreign countries. In an update on its website, WestJet stated that this step is essential for maintaining operational control and safeguarding the broader network. Travelers are advised to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
Despite the gradual reduction in operations, WestJet is still engaged in negotiations with flight attendants to reach a mutually acceptable agreement. The airline is facing a 72-hour strike notice issued by its flight attendants, triggering a lockout notice in response. This development could potentially impact around 4,287 flight attendants starting at 12:01 a.m. MT on Sunday, coinciding with the busy August long weekend.
WestJet’s regional flights and codeshare flights operated by partner airlines are currently unaffected by the situation. The ongoing dispute revolves around issues such as ground pay, with flight attendants claiming that a significant portion of their work hours go unpaid under the current credit hour system employed by WestJet. The company, however, defends its pay structure, stating that it compensates flight attendants at a higher rate to cover additional duties during what they consider as unpaid time.
In an attempt to address concerns raised by employees, WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech has acknowledged discontent with the existing pay system and expressed openness to making changes, provided they are financially viable. WestJet has assured that passengers who booked directly with the airline will be informed of any schedule changes, while those who booked through third-party channels should coordinate changes through their respective agencies.
Passengers with flights scheduled until August 4 have the option to modify or cancel their bookings, with potential refunds being issued as travel credits instead of direct monetary reimbursements. The airline emphasizes the importance of staying informed and proactive during this period of uncertainty.
