“Trump Endorses Challenger to Take Down Massie in Key Primary”

U.S. President Donald Trump is once again flexing his influence within the Republican Party by supporting efforts to remove Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, who challenged him on the Epstein files. Massie, a seven-term representative from Kentucky, is facing a crucial primary on Tuesday to secure his spot as the Republican candidate in the upcoming midterm election. Trump has endorsed a competitor against Massie, rallying Republicans to vote him out, resulting in a surge of campaign spending that has set a record for a House primary.

Trump’s disdain for Massie has been publicly evident, with the president labeling him as “a major sleazebag,” “disloyal, ungracious, and sanctimonious,” and “the worst and most unreliable Republican Congressman in the history of our Country.” This criticism has intensified through a series of social media posts targeting Massie.

Massie gained national attention in 2025 for leading the congressional push to release Department of Justice files related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigations, despite Trump’s strong opposition. Known for his independent streak since his first election win in 2012, Massie often diverged from the party’s stance on conservative issues.

Despite Trump’s declining popularity among the general electorate, he continues to wield significant power over the Republican base, especially in removing members he perceives as disloyal. Recent examples include the defeat of Republican Senator Bill Cassidy in Louisiana, who voted against Trump during the impeachment proceedings, and the removal of five Republican state senators in Indiana who opposed redrawing election maps to benefit the GOP in the midterms.

The upcoming primary in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District will determine whether Massie becomes the next target of Trump’s political retribution. Massie’s challenger, Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL with ties to Trump advisers, has garnered support from influential figures like Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who criticized Massie for his opposition to various initiatives without achieving substantial results.

As voters in Kentucky weigh their choices, individuals like Tonya Young, a special education teacher from Covington, express uncertainty about the balance between loyalty and independent thinking within the party. The outcome of the primary will shed light on the enduring influence of Trump within the Republican ranks.
