An official from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada has revealed that a helicopter suffered an “inflight breakup” before crashing in southern New Brunswick over the weekend, resulting in the tragic death of the pilot, Vincent Van Zutphen from Mabou, N.S. The incident occurred when his Robinson R-44 helicopter went down on Saturday while en route from Fredericton to Sussex Airport.
Allan Chaulk, a senior regional investigator with the safety board, mentioned that the exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined. However, based on the findings at the crash site in the Norton area, investigators believe that the helicopter underwent an inflight breakup, as Chaulk explained how the helicopter did not remain intact in one location but rather broke into several larger pieces scattered across different areas.
Chaulk refrained from providing more details on the breakup’s nature but clarified that it was not triggered by an explosion. He emphasized the importance of avoiding premature conclusions or speculations and highlighted the team’s methodical approach in analyzing gathered evidence to uncover the truth.
The investigative team has been diligently working at the crash site throughout the week. The helicopter will soon be transported to an examination facility in Dartmouth, N.S., for further analysis and investigation.
Vincent Van Zutphen, the president of Zutphen Contractors, a construction company based in Nova Scotia, was the sole occupant of the helicopter. Although official authorities have not disclosed the pilot’s identity, Zutphen Contractors confirmed to CBC News that the pilot was indeed Vincent Van Zutphen.
A close friend of the victim, Josh Kelly, described Van Zutphen as someone who embraced life with a passionate and adventurous spirit. Kelly mentioned that Van Zutphen had recently embarked on helicopter pilot training, displaying great enthusiasm for the endeavor, making his sudden departure all the more tragic.
