Zelenskyy disclosed that Kyiv had identified five potential Russian strategies to escalate the conflict in the north. He emphasized the examination of intelligence data on Russia’s planned offensive actions in the Chernihiv-Kyiv corridor, resulting in increased deployment of forces in that area.
Recent alerts from Zelenskyy have highlighted a potential threat to Ukraine’s northern border from Belarus, a key Russian ally. The president mentioned observing unusual activities at the border without providing specific details. Ukraine’s top army commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported that Kyiv possessed intelligence indicating active planning of offensive operations by the Russian General Staff from the north.
Concerning the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia since Moscow’s invasion in February 2022, Zelenskyy expressed worries about Moscow’s efforts to involve Belarus further in the war. He indicated that Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry would devise additional diplomatic measures towards Belarus without specifying the actions.
In a subsequent address, Zelenskyy expressed frustration over the recurring threat of potential Russian involvement of Belarus in expanding the conflict, warning of significant consequences for such actions. Ukraine successfully repelled a substantial Russian armored advance towards Kyiv from the north during the initial invasion in 2022. Minsk has maintained strong support for Moscow throughout the conflict, allowing Russian drones to operate from Belarus and deploying the Russian Oreshnik missile system.
While no direct movements of equipment or personnel were detected at the border, Ukraine’s border guards spokesperson, Andriy Demchenko, noted the increasing pressure Russia was exerting on Belarus. The situation underscores the strategic importance of monitoring developments in the region closely.
