“Northern Manitoba Lacrosse Team Ready to Hit the Road Again”

After covering numerous distances, even amidst a 2025 season shortened by wildfires, the sole high school lacrosse team in northern Manitoba is excited to resume traveling. The Hapnot Collegiate Kopper Kings have initiated indoor workouts in Flin Flon due to excessive snow outdoors, gearing up for their upcoming third season in May. Each game for the team involves traveling south, typically an eight-hour journey to Winnipeg, where they play multiple games over the weekend before returning home.

Coach Erik Rogalka, a former lacrosse player from Winnipeg, established the team in 2024 and acknowledges the challenges of managing logistics. Drayden Lowe, an early team member and Type 1 diabetic, plays with an insulin pump and has been actively involved in garnering support and equipment for the team. Despite a winless first season, the team showed improvement with each game, gaining valuable experience.

Logan Simon, entering his third season, had no prior lacrosse experience but has made significant progress. The team’s inaugural goal was scored by Simon, a memorable moment for him and his teammates. Unfortunately, the 2025 season was cut short due to wildfires, forcing the cancellation of remaining games following the evacuation of Flin Flon and nearby areas.

As they strive to recover from the setbacks of the previous year, the team aims to build on their progress with the addition of female players for the first time. Faith Bonnett, one of the two girls on the team, expresses enthusiasm for the sport and hopes to inspire more girls to join, potentially forming a complete female team in the future.

Despite being considered underdogs against larger schools, the players are eager for the challenge and aspire to secure more victories this season. Lowe, who faced personal losses during the wildfires, is determined to make the most of the upcoming season, aiming for a successful year ahead. The team remains optimistic about their prospects and is prepared to face the competition with renewed determination.
