Grab your winter gear because the second season of North of North returns to Ice Cove. This acclaimed comedy series, a collaboration among APTN, CBC, and Netflix, follows Siaja (played by Anna Lambe), a young Inuk woman rebuilding her life post a highly publicized breakup with her husband. Season 1 was a global success, ranking in Netflix’s Top 10 in 33 countries and receiving accolades for its blend of humor and poignant themes.
“We adore comedy that touches the heart. We enjoy laughter but also embrace tears,” shared co-creator and executive producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald with CBC News. The series garnered nine Canadian Screen Awards, including best comedy series and best lead performer in a comedy for Lambe.
Season 2 resumes where Season 1 concluded, with Siaja managing motherhood, work, and dating while navigating complex relationships with her mother, Neevee (Maika Harper), and estranged father, Alistair (Jay Ryan). As Siaja discovers she has an older sister, she strives to reconstruct her life and identity, delving into the Inuktitut principle of pilimmaksarniq — mastering skills through observation, practice, and effort.
The season unfolds with Siaja’s challenges escalating, leading to a tumultuous phase. Meanwhile, Neevee, previously guarded, begins to open up, revealing her acceptance of not searching for her firstborn. Siaja faces dilemmas regarding her mother’s wishes versus her desire to connect with her sister and aid Neevee in finding solace and closure.
Filming in Iqaluit once again for the fictional Ice Cove town, Season 2 brings authenticity to the series. The Arctic backdrop, despite its harsh conditions, adds a magical touch to the show. The creators emphasize the importance of involving Inuit cast and crew to maintain authenticity and realism in the production. The series’ fashion draws inspiration from diverse Inuit styles, focusing on unique, handmade pieces that capture the culture’s essence.
