Five villagers who had been trapped in a flooded cave in central Laos for over a week were discovered alive, rescuers confirmed on Wednesday. The villagers entered the cave in Xaisomboun province on May 19, but heavy rainfall caused flash flooding that blocked their exit, leaving seven individuals stranded. According to Lao and Thai rescue teams involved in the operation, five of the villagers were found safe, while two remain missing, prompting ongoing search efforts.
Bounkham Luanglath from the Lao organization Rescue Volunteer for People, collaborating closely with local authorities in the rescue mission, expressed relief at the successful discovery of the trapped individuals. A video shared by a Thai rescue group depicted the moment divers emerged from the water to locate the villagers, who were seen sitting on a rock surrounded by floodwater, each wearing a headlamp.
Following the rescue, videos surfaced showing rescuers both inside and outside the cave celebrating with cheers, jumps, and embraces. Rescue workers from Thailand, including divers with experience from the 2018 Thai cave rescue, arrived at the site to assist in the operation. The cave, situated in a remote area in Xaisomboun province’s Longcheng district, presented challenges due to its rugged terrain and adverse weather conditions.
Online footage from Thai rescuers illustrated the arduous journey to the cave entrance, involving a four-kilometer steep hike on foot, leading to a narrow and rocky entrance. While the reason for the villagers’ entry into the cave remains unconfirmed officially, it is believed that locals frequented the cave in search of gold, despite authorities’ warnings about safety risks.
The successful rescue mission has brought hope to the community, with efforts continuing to locate the two missing individuals.
