Brad Jacobs, the Olympic champion, has emerged victorious once more.
Captaining the Shield Curling Club, Jacobs led his team to victory in the inaugural Rock League championship held at Toronto’s Mattamy Athletic Centre on Sunday. The win marked the end of the debut season of the professional curling league, with the squad earning $100,000 for their triumph.
Reflecting on the win, Jacobs expressed, “There’s no feeling quite like winning. We constantly strive for that winning feeling, regardless of the competition. We participate in numerous high-stakes tournaments, and this is just another one of those moments.”
In a thrilling conclusion to the season, Shield defeated Typhoon Curling Club with a score of 2-1, captivating the audience of around 500 fans in attendance.

The championship match saw Shield’s Jacobs swiftly outplay Typhoon’s Niklas Edin with an 8-6 victory, while the contests in mixed doubles and women’s curling remained highly competitive.
During the women’s match, Anna Hasselborg secured a 7-5 win for Typhoon with a crucial shot, setting the stage for a tense draw-to-the-button tiebreaker in the mixed doubles event due to a 7-7 tie.
With all eyes on the mixed doubles match, Shield’s Benoit Schwarz-van Berkel delivered a winning shot that landed perfectly on the button, clinching the Rock League championship title.
Schwarz-van Berkel’s exceptional performance earned him the MVP title, while Alina Pätz from Alpine was recognized as The Ultimate Competitor by her peers. Both players received $5,000 for their individual achievements.
Reflecting on his MVP award, Schwarz-van Berkel shared, “It’s a significant honor considering the caliber of talent in this league. I am at a loss for words.”

Jacobs highlighted the team’s determination during the championship match, stating, “Our goal was to claim the championship title and be the first winners of this league. We approached today’s match with the mindset of giving it our all, and I believe we succeeded in that.”
