Calgary Native Prepares for Historic NASA Moon Mission

Jenni Gibbons, a Calgary native with a passion for space exploration, is gearing up for an important role in NASA’s upcoming Artemis II mission, marking the first human moon landing in over five decades.

In an interview, Gibbons expressed her fascination with space and its significant impact on daily life. While she serves as the backup astronaut to Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen for the mission, Gibbons will play a vital part in ensuring a successful launch and space journey.

NASA has scheduled the Artemis II mission for a launch date of April 1, with a six-day window until April 6. Previous attempts in February were postponed due to technical issues like hydrogen fuel leaks and helium flow problems.

Should all go smoothly, Hansen, 50, from London, Ont., will join veteran NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch on the mission. Gibbons, as Hansen’s understudy, is poised to step in if needed to maintain Canada’s presence on the mission.

Having nurtured a childhood dream of space travel, Gibbons emphasized her close relationship with Hansen and her dedication to supporting his mission success. She will undergo rigorous training and quarantine alongside the primary crew members leading up to the launch.

During the mission, Gibbons will serve as a crucial communication link between Earth and space, providing guidance to Hansen and the team on mission objectives. The anticipation is high among the crew as they prepare to embark on a journey they have meticulously planned for years.

Gibbons’ journey to becoming an astronaut began with inspirations from renowned figures like Canadian astronaut Roberta Bondar. Her educational background in mechanical engineering and a Ph.D. from Jesus College in Cambridge paved the way for her selection by the Canadian Space Agency in 2017.

Highlighting Canada’s integral role in space exploration, Gibbons emphasized the country’s expertise in technology, particularly in fields like robotics. She believes that investing in space technologies not only advances Canada’s space capabilities but also stimulates economic growth and innovation.

Against the backdrop of global challenges, Gibbons sees the Artemis II mission as a symbol of international collaboration and achievement. The mission’s objective of venturing farther into space than ever before excites Gibbons, who looks forward to the astronauts’ unique perspectives on the moon’s unexplored territories.

As the Artemis II crew prepares to witness the moon up close, Gibbons underscores the human connection to space exploration, bridging the awe of those observing from Earth with the wonder experienced by astronauts in space.
