A father fatally shot eight children, seven of whom were his own, and wounded two women, marking the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over two years.
Sheriff Henry Whitehorn of Caddo Parish expressed deep sorrow over the heart-wrenching events, emphasizing the devastating impact of domestic violence on innocent lives. The news conference conveyed a compassionate message, with city officials and law enforcement appealing to the community for support for the affected family members.
Highlighting the profound grief facing three mothers and a father mourning the loss of their children, officials underscored the serious repercussions of neglecting the warning signs of domestic violence. The victims, three boys and five girls aged between three and 11, were identified as Jayla Elkins, Shayla Elkins, Braylon Snow, Khedarrion Snow, Kayla Pugh, Layla Pugh, Markaydon Pugh, and Sariahh Snow.
The perpetrator, Shamar Elkins, 31, carried out the heinous act using an assault-style weapon at two separate locations in Shreveport early Sunday morning. The children were fatally shot, and two women, including his wife Shaneiqua Elkins and another woman believed to be his girlfriend, sustained critical injuries. Both women remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Shamar Elkins was eventually confronted by law enforcement following a pursuit and succumbed to gunfire, although the circumstances of his death were not immediately clarified. While no prior instances of domestic violence involving Elkins were known to the authorities, he had previously been placed on probation for illegal weapon use in 2019.
Reports suggest that the Elkins couple was in the process of separating, with a court appearance scheduled for Monday. Allegedly, discussions regarding the separation escalated into a tragic confrontation. Family members described Shaneiqua as a devoted mother who cherished her children’s achievements and meticulously cared for them.
