Canada’s hopes of advancing to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals were dashed as they fell 3-1 to Kazakhstan in a qualifying match. Kazakhstan secured victory by winning both of Saturday’s opening games in the women’s international tennis showdown held in Astana.
In the doubles match, Anna Danilina and Zhibek Kulambayeva defeated Bianca Andreescu and Kayla Cross with a score of 7-5, 6-1. Yulia Putintseva sealed the deal for Kazakhstan by triumphing over Andreescu in a grueling match that lasted three hours and 39 minutes, with a final score of 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (4).
Despite the loss, Canada’s captain Marie-Eve Pelletier commended her team for their strong performance and fighting spirit. Andreescu made a strong comeback to international tennis, showcasing her talent by defeating Zhiyenbayeva 6-4, 7-6 (4) in her first BJK Cup match since 2022.
The planned fifth match between Cross and Sonja Zhiyenbayeva was canceled after Kazakhstan secured the overall victory. The teams were tied at 1-1 before Saturday’s matches, with Canada’s defeat marking a return to the international tennis scene for Andreescu.
Kazakhstan’s win propels them to the Finals in September, while Canada, the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup champions, will participate in the 2026 playoffs in November. Canada faced challenges with the absence of their top singles players, Victoria Mboko and Leylah Fernandez.
In another matchup, Great Britain advanced to the Finals by defeating Australia in a best-of-five contest. The Billie Jean King Cup Finals will be held in Shenzhen in September, with China qualifying automatically as the host nation. Additional finalists will be determined from matchups between Italy and Japan, Switzerland and Czech Republic, Slovenia and Spain, Belgium and the United States, as well as Poland and Ukraine. The losing teams will proceed to the Billie Jean King Cup playoffs in November to vie for a chance to qualify for the 2027 tournament.
