Addressing the rumors surrounding Prime Minister Mark Carney’s interest in Canada’s participation in Eurovision, Green acknowledged the speculations. He highlighted that while there hasn’t been any concrete proposal on his desk, Eurovision has historically been welcoming to participants who align with the event’s values.
The Eurovision Song Contest, known for countries performing original songs, is managed by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Although full participation has traditionally been open to EBU full members, exceptions have been made in recent years for non-European or associate-member participants like Australia.
CBC/Radio-Canada holds associate membership with the EBU since 1950. Despite this status, it’s important to note that associate members like CBC/Radio-Canada are not automatically eligible to compete in Eurovision, according to Leon Mar, the broadcaster’s senior director of public affairs.
While CBC/Radio-Canada actively engages with the EBU and participates in Eurovision-related activities, the decision to compete in the contest entails a formal agreement with the EBU and meeting specific criteria. The broadcaster’s editorial independence and operational autonomy are also highlighted in this context.
The possibility of Canada joining Eurovision surfaced in last year’s federal budget, showcasing government interest in exploring such participation. However, any potential participation by Canada would need EBU approval and likely involve submitting a formal proposal. At present, no official application or timeline has been disclosed.
As the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 progresses, Green’s statements keep the door ajar for Canada’s potential involvement in the future, emphasizing the necessity of EBU approval and a structured approach for participation.
