Hamilton’s new American Hockey League (AHL) team will be practicing at the Harry Howell Twin-Pad Arena in Flamborough, as confirmed by city officials. Construction work at the arena is scheduled to commence shortly. The facility, named after renowned NHL Hall of Famer Harry Howell, who had an illustrious career with the New York Rangers, is set to undergo enhancements for the team’s training needs.
Mayor Andrea Horwath expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the positive impact on the local community. The AHL recently announced the approval of the Bridgeport Islanders’ relocation to Hamilton by its board of governors, following the initial announcement made on March 19. The team, owned by the NHL’s New York Islanders, serves as the affiliate team responsible for nurturing player prospects, with a significant number of NHL players having honed their skills in the AHL.
The city plans to integrate a two-level AHL-exclusive training facility within the existing Harry Howell arena, ensuring that current users will not experience disruptions in service. Additionally, the arena will host various community events, including open practices and developmental clinics, offering opportunities for public engagement with the team and the sport.
The New York Islanders, previously based in Connecticut for over two decades, expressed gratitude to their former city and fans for their support. Hamilton, having last hosted an AHL team in 2015, is eager to welcome professional hockey back to the city. Notably, past AHL Hamilton Bulldogs players, such as Brendan Gallagher, P.K. Subban, Carey Price, and Max Pacioretty, went on to have successful NHL careers with the Montreal Canadiens.
The arena is gearing up for the upcoming season by announcing the availability of private suites and premium seats for reservation starting on April 6, along with offering season seat memberships. This move signals a new era for hockey in Hamilton, as the city prepares to embrace its AHL team and the exciting opportunities it brings for both residents and sports enthusiasts.
