A seismic event of magnitude 5.6 has occurred beneath the ocean near Vancouver Island. The earthquake, according to Earthquakes Canada, occurred at 11:41 p.m. PT on Sunday, approximately 219 kilometers southwest of Port Hardy at the northern end of Vancouver Island. It originated about 10 kilometers below the ocean floor surface and did not pose a tsunami threat.
The earthquake’s epicenter is close to various significant communities on Vancouver Island, including Campbell River, situated around 300 kilometers away, and Port Alberni, approximately 330 kilometers away. Reports indicate that the tremor was felt as far as Metro Vancouver, over 450 kilometers southeast of the epicenter. Residents in northern Vancouver Island also experienced shaking from the event.
