The Toronto Blue Jays have moved right-handed pitcher Shane Bieber to the 60-day injured list. This decision, announced on Monday, requires Bieber to remain inactive for 60 days starting from the date he was placed on the injured list. Initially put on the 15-day IL on March 22 due to elbow inflammation, Bieber’s absence is expected until at least May 21.
Bieber was acquired by Toronto from Cleveland during last year’s trade deadline. The recipient of the 2020 American League Cy Young Award performed well, boasting a 4-2 record with a 3.57 earned-run average in seven games for Toronto following his return from Tommy John surgery.
During the postseason, Bieber achieved a 2-1 record with a 3.86 ERA in five appearances as Toronto progressed to Game 7 of the World Series. Subsequently, in the off-season, he chose to exercise his $16-million US player option rather than test free agency.
This move to the 60-day IL by Bieber opens up a roster spot for infielder Lenyn Sosa, who was acquired by Toronto in a trade with the Chicago White Sox on Monday, involving outfielder Jordan Rich and future considerations.
Sosa, aged 26, recorded a .212 batting average with three RBIs across 12 games for the White Sox this season. In 2025, he achieved a .264 batting average with 137 hits, 22 home runs, and 75 RBIs over 140 games.
Rich, drafted by the Blue Jays in the 17th round of the 2025 First-Year Player Draft, is yet to make his professional debut.
