“Loblaw’s Q2 Profits Surge With Generic Drug Sales”

Loblaw reported increased profits in the second quarter as the grocery chain continued to attract budget-conscious shoppers to its discount stores No Frills and Maxi. The company highlighted strong sales growth in its pharmacy segment, attributing the trend to the popularity of generic GLP-1 weight loss medications.

The Ontario-based retailer disclosed its financial performance for the quarter ending June 20, revealing revenue exceeding $15.3 billion, representing a four percent increase from the previous quarter. Net income available to common shareholders surged by five percent to $751 million.

Loblaw noted a 1.6 percent rise in same-store sales for its core retail food business, while its pharmacy unit, which includes Shoppers Drug Mart, experienced a 4.6 percent increase in same-store sales, driven by a 7.5 percent growth in pharmacy and health-care services.

During a conference call with analysts, Chief Financial Officer Richard Dufresne emphasized the impact of generic GLP-1 drugs on pharmacy performance, expressing optimism about the potential for increased revenue, gross profit, and margin rates.

The company disclosed that sales of GLP-1 drugs have increased by 40 percent year-to-date, attributing the growth to consumer demand. Loblaw executives also discussed changing consumer behavior, noting a shift towards purchasing frozen vegetables over fresh produce due to inflationary pressures on fresh food items.

CEO Per Bank highlighted a notable increase in frozen vegetable sales at No Frills and Maxi stores, indicating a shift in consumer preferences to manage inflation. Dufresne reiterated the company’s strong position in the market, particularly in the hard discount segment, where they are outperforming competitors.

Statistics Canada reported that the overall inflation rate in June decreased to 2.8 percent, with grocery price hikes moderating to 3.9 percent from 4.3 percent in May. Loblaw’s stock, listed on the Toronto exchange, showed minimal movement on Thursday, reflecting a year-to-date increase of approximately six percent.
