“Quebec Launches Real-Time Gas Price Tool”

Quebec drivers seeking the best fuel prices now have a new online tool to aid them. The recently launched interactive platform by Quebec’s energy board permits users to pinpoint service stations on a map and monitor real-time gas prices across the province. This initiative is part of the Act for responsible energy resource management, passed at the National Assembly in June 2025, coinciding with market fluctuations due to Middle Eastern conflicts.

The platform, available on the regulatory board’s website, aims to enhance transparency in the gas market, empowering drivers to make informed decisions. Gas stations are now mandated to display gasoline and diesel prices on the platform, with a requirement to update prices within five minutes of any changes.

According to Benjamin Bourque, a spokesperson for the energy board, the interactive map currently lists 2,671 registered retailers. Failure to comply with the new regulations could lead to fines ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 for initial violations. While the board allows a transition period for gas stations to adjust, non-compliant retailers will face penalties in the future.

Additionally, users noticing price discrepancies between the pump and the map are encouraged to notify the retailer first. If the issue persists, users can report the inconsistency directly on the platform. The push for these changes in legislation came after a 2024 government-commissioned study, which prompted Quebec’s former economy minister, Pierre Fitzgibbon, to advocate for these measures.

The study, led by economics professor Robert Clark, revealed higher gas prices in regions like Quebec City, Gaspésie, and Côte-Nord. Factors contributing to price variations include local market structures and gas station ownership concentration. The objective of these changes is to drive down prices, particularly in regions with higher costs.

Simon Bourassa, spokesperson for CAA-Québec, expressed optimism that the new interactive map will empower consumers to compare prices efficiently before refueling. However, he highlighted challenges faced by retailers in adjusting prices due to ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts and rising crude oil prices. Another notable change stemming from the study was the removal of the gasoline floor price in June 2025, which was supported by the Quebec government.
