Australia issued a warning on Monday regarding the potential spread of H5N1 bird flu following a mass mortality incident involving around 50 greater crested terns off the coast south of Adelaide. Despite this event, there have been no reports of the virus affecting Australian farms, many of which have implemented strict measures to protect their poultry since the virus was first identified in June.
Agriculture Minister Julie Collins confirmed the presence of H5N1 bird flu in a group of 49 dead and 35 sick terns discovered through aerial surveillance near Cape Jaffa, approximately 250 kilometers from Adelaide, on Friday. Collins emphasized the likelihood of more wildlife being impacted as the virus spreads, leading to significant losses.
Australia has recorded a total of 74 confirmed cases across various states, with a concentration in South Australia. Both Australia and New Zealand, which recently reported its first H5N1 case, have been preparing for the virus for years through enhanced biosecurity measures on farms, monitoring of shore birds, vaccination programs for vulnerable species, and practicing response strategies.
In recent years, H5N1 bird flu has caused substantial losses to the poultry industry worldwide, affecting hundreds of millions of birds and mammals and resulting in significant economic impacts.
