WestJet has been criticized by Canada’s transport regulator for creating obstacles for travelers with disabilities by restricting certain power wheelchairs from its aircraft. The Canadian Transportation Agency ruled that WestJet must eliminate its 136-kilogram weight limit on mobility aids by July 2027.
To address the issue, the regulator suggested that WestJet utilize “spreader plates” to evenly distribute the weight of wheelchairs in the cargo hold and make alternative travel arrangements with other airlines until the weight limit is removed. The case was initiated by Steven Fletcher, a resident of Winnipeg and former federal minister, who was prevented from flying with his customized wheelchair on a Winnipeg to Toronto flight last year.
Fletcher and advocates argue that the weight restriction has hindered air travel in certain regions and discriminated against individuals with disabilities. They believe that WestJet should have proactively accommodated power wheelchairs, emphasizing that the weight limit is arbitrary and unjustifiable.
WestJet declined to comment on the matter as it is still under review by the regulator. The agency is expected to issue a final ruling on the advance notice requirements for passengers using mobility aids.
Last year, WestJet defended its weight limit as crucial for flight safety and compliant with accessibility regulations. The company established the 136-kilogram threshold after a technical analysis based on the cargo holds’ weight limits per square inch of its Boeing aircraft.
Advocates stress the significant impact on mobility for individuals who rely on power wheelchairs and highlight that most airlines have less stringent restrictions. In cases like Fletcher’s, using a different wheelchair during a trip led to discomfort and medical issues.
The policy of restricting power wheelchairs is seen as problematic by advocates, especially since other major North American airlines do not maintain such low weight caps for similar-sized planes. Despite safety concerns, WestJet and Flair Airlines, which operates exclusively with Boeing 737s, uphold the weight limit due to aircraft weight restrictions.
American Airlines faced a similar situation in 2020 but later reversed its decision following advocacy efforts. Advocates emphasize the challenge posed by WestJet and Flair Airlines’ restrictions, particularly on routes where limited airline options exist.
Fletcher emphasized the importance of unrestricted movement within one’s own country for individuals with disabilities, emphasizing that it is not merely a service enhancement but a fundamental aspect of citizenship.
