As the Artemis II spacecraft travels to the moon, it carries the Innu Nation flag on board. Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, part of the crew that launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, has included this special flag among his personal items for the trip.
The Innu Nation flag, presented as a gift from the community, is now journeying through outer space. Hansen, along with fellow astronauts and researchers, visited Kamestastin in Northern Labrador in September 2023 for training in planetary science and lunar geology. The site, a remote meteorite impact crater deemed by the Canadian Space Agency as Earth’s closest resemblance to the moon, holds significant cultural value for the Innu Nation.
Jodie Ashini, the cultural guardian for the Innu Nation, emphasized the importance of cultural sensitivity in their interactions with Hansen during his visit. She mentioned that Hansen fully immersed himself in Innu culture, engaging with guardians, visiting schools, and meeting children in the communities of Natuashish and Sheshatshiu.
During their research activities, the Mushuau Innu Guardians provided invaluable knowledge and insights into the area, enhancing the astronauts’ understanding of the region’s cultural significance. Hansen expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to learn from the Innu people and share in their traditions.
Ashini humorously recounted how the idea of taking the flag to the moon arose, indicating Hansen’s willingness to bring it on the mission. The community eagerly awaits updates on the crew’s progress, particularly the younger generation, who are inspired by the mission.
The community is eagerly following the astronauts’ journey, with Ashini remarking on the surreal connection between the Innu nation and the space mission. While the fate of the flag upon its return to Earth remains uncertain, Ashini expressed hopes of displaying it at the cultural center in Sheshatshiu, possibly with the astronauts’ signatures.
