Jonathan Marshall has opened a new typewriter repair shop with a mission to encourage people to be more deliberate in their choice of words. According to Marshall, typewriters are an excellent tool for achieving this goal.
Marshall highlighted the contrast between using a modern word processor, where mistakes can easily be corrected, and writing on a typewriter, where a mistake could mean starting over. He emphasized that the need for precision when using a typewriter leads to a different writing experience that engages the mind.
The Hamilton Typewriter Company, situated within The Cotton Factory, officially opened on March 28. Apart from offering repair services, the shop serves as a museum where visitors can explore typewriters. Marshall, also known professionally as Jonny Types, expressed his desire to create a space where typewriters are appreciated and interacted with.
The shop’s opening drew over 200 visitors, with more than 30 appointments already scheduled by last week. Marshall noted the diverse community of typewriter collectors in Hamilton and surrounding areas, with a growing interest among people of all ages and genders.
Having started his typewriter journey a decade ago, Marshall now owns a collection of 50 typewriters, including models from renowned brands like Corona, Olivetti, and Royal Arrow. Some typewriters are available for sale, while others are part of the museum display, all meticulously maintained to ensure they are in working condition.
As the demand for typewriters continues to rise, Marshall emphasized the appeal of vintage and traditional technologies in an era of rapid technological advancements. He believes that typewriters offer a unique writing experience, with keys that provide a smooth and satisfying feel.
Marshall encourages newcomers to explore different typewriter models online, choose one that resonates with them, and give it a try. To maintain typewriters, he advises regular dusting and protection from moisture, emphasizing that these machines were designed for frequent use. Ultimately, Marshall aims to reintegrate typewriters into daily life and routines, fostering a renewed appreciation for these classic writing instruments.
