“PM Carney Urges Adherence to Intl Law in US-Israel-Iran Conflict”

Prime Minister Mark Carney has called on all parties involved in the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran to adhere to international law and refrain from targeting civilian infrastructure. Carney emphasized the importance of respecting international laws during a press briefing in Brampton, Ont., stating that it is crucial not to harm civilians or civilian infrastructure in any conflict. His remarks came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump issued a warning to Iran, threatening severe consequences.

Trump’s ultimatum to Iran, demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz or facing attacks on civilian infrastructure, has raised concerns globally. UN Secretary General António Guterres has highlighted that such actions would violate international law. Carney hinted that Trump’s statements might be part of negotiation tactics rather than actual intentions.

There is a pattern of Trump making bold statements publicly but later retracting or altering his stance in pursuit of agreements, as seen in his trade policies. The term “TACO” has been coined by commentators, standing for “Trump always chickens out,” to describe Trump’s tendency to backtrack on certain policies.

Additionally, Trump claimed on social media that the U.S. had influenced a change in Iran’s government, leading to a more cooperative leadership. The conflict between the U.S. and Iran escalated when Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reportedly killed, prompting Iran to appoint his son, Mojtaba, as his successor.

The ongoing clashes have resulted in numerous casualties on both sides, with thousands of strikes and retaliatory attacks. Carney, questioned about his previous support for the conflict, reiterated concerns about Iran’s history of sponsoring terrorism and nuclear ambitions. The situation remains complex and volatile, with international actors closely monitoring developments.
