The Trump administration aims to address numerous issues within the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) before July 1, with ongoing negotiations expected to extend beyond that date, according to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Greer mentioned that while not all issues may be resolved by July 1, progress is being made to tackle many of them promptly.
This year, CUSMA is undergoing a mandatory review as part of President Trump’s efforts to realign global trade and attract key industries away from the U.S.’s neighboring countries. Prior to Trump’s imposition of tariffs, around 76 percent of Canada’s exported goods were directed to the U.S., compared to only 17 percent of U.S. exported goods destined for Canada.
During an event at the Hudson Institute, Greer indicated that the U.S. might have to initiate procedures to withdraw from the North American trade agreement to advance negotiations further. He noted that under the CUSMA sunset clause, a complete withdrawal from the pact would require a decade.
