Hyundai Canada has initiated a safety recall for certain Elantra Hybrid vehicles manufactured between 2024 and 2026 over potential fire hazards. The recall pertains to 6,082 cars in Canada, as confirmed by Hyundai officials.
Despite the recall, there have been no reported incidents of fires, injuries, or fatalities related to this issue in Canada, according to Hyundai spokesperson Nitish Bissonauth in communication with CBC News. In parallel, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recalled 54,337 vehicles in the United States due to the same safety concern.
The problem stems from a potential malfunction in the hybrid power control unit of some vehicles, which may result in overheating, Hyundai has disclosed. The NHTSA highlights that the issue could lead to a “no start” situation or a reduced power mode in most instances, with the risk of overheating and fire escalation.
As a precautionary measure, Hyundai is reaching out to all impacted drivers and will provide a complimentary software update to rectify the overheating issue.
