Canadian Astronaut Jeremy Hansen to Shift Careers After Space Agency Retirement

Jeremy Hansen, a Canadian astronaut, is set to explore new career options as he retires from the Canadian Space Agency this fall, as announced by the agency on Monday. While Hansen has not disclosed his exact plans yet, he will continue to serve as a reservist with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Looking at the career paths of previous Canadian astronauts, it is evident that there are diverse opportunities beyond space exploration. Marc Garneau, one of the initial six Canadian astronauts and the first Canadian in space, later ventured into politics, serving as a Member of Parliament and holding ministerial positions before passing away at the age of 76.

Roberta Bondar, the first Canadian female astronaut and a neurologist, embarked on post-astronaut pursuits such as public speaking, research, and photography after her space shuttle mission in 1992. Chris Hadfield, known for his spacewalk and multiple space flights, transitioned into music, television appearances, and writing following his retirement from the Canadian Space Agency in 2013.

Julie Payette, who flew to space twice, became Canada’s 29th governor general in 2017 but resigned amid workplace culture controversy in 2021. Bjarni Tryggvason, another original Canadian astronaut, served as a payload specialist on a space shuttle mission and later participated in aviation commemorative events before his passing in 2022.

The post-space careers of these renowned Canadian astronauts showcase the diverse paths individuals can take after their space adventures.
