“22-Year-Old Tree Planter Fights to Reforest Manitoba”

Marley Moose, a 22-year-old tree planter, is dedicating her third consecutive summer to reforesting northern Manitoba areas affected by wildfires. Despite her efforts, the task has become more daunting due to the discontinuation of a government initiative aiming to plant two billion trees by 2030.

In 2016, a forest in Manitoba’s Interlake region suffered damage from a jack pine budworm infestation, only to be further devastated by wildfires in 2021. The ongoing destruction of forests in the region highlights the urgent need for reforestation efforts.

Marley Moose, participating in a tree-planting program by Nekoté LP, an Indigenous-owned corporation, expressed her emotional connection to the land and the importance of environmental stewardship. She emphasized the reciprocal relationship between caring for the earth and receiving its care in return.

According to the Canadian Tree Nursery Association (CTNA), Canada is losing trees at an alarming rate, primarily due to factors like deforestation for development and natural disasters like wildfires. The cancellation of the 2 Billion Trees Program, a federal initiative announced by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has left reforestation projects like Nekoté LP’s in a precarious position.

The CTNA underscores the urgent need for reforestation efforts, especially in the face of recurring wildfires and environmental challenges. The cancellation of the tree-planting program has created a significant setback in addressing forest regeneration and combating climate change.

Farron Sharp, a project manager with Blue-Green Planet Project, is actively seeking new funding opportunities to support tree-planting initiatives. Collaborative efforts between seed producers, foresters, and tree planters are essential in finding alternative solutions following the program’s cancellation.

The importance of reforestation efforts extends beyond environmental benefits, serving as a countermeasure to the negative impacts of unsustainable practices and climate change. Marley Moose and her team’s commitment to tree planting reflects a long-term vision of preserving forests for future generations to enjoy.
