Prince Edward Island is considering a unique approach to power generation using dead cattle and lobsters. According to P.E.I. Agriculture Minister Bloyce Thompson, the government is exploring the possibility of implementing a biodigester system on the island. This system would involve converting animal waste, seafood waste, and other food waste into energy to potentially supply power to Borden-Carleton.
A biodigester is a sealed system that decomposes animal waste, such as a dead cattle’s spine and brains, into a gas that can be utilized for heat and energy production. Currently, P.E.I. transports such waste to a biodigester in Quebec due to concerns related to bovine spongiform encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease, which can pose risks to cattle and is prevalent in specific tissues like the spinal cord and brain.
Bruce Andrews, the president of Atlantic Beef Products in Albany, P.E.I., revealed that the company incurs significant costs annually to transport waste to Quebec. Andrews mentioned the potential benefits of using a Rapid Organic Converter (ROC) to convert waste into energy, reducing expenses and greenhouse gas emissions.
Thompson highlighted the environmental concerns associated with burying dead cattle and hinted at locating the biodigester near Atlantic Beef Products. He also mentioned successful tests involving sending dead lobsters to a biodigester facility in Alberta, confirming the viability of the process.
While the implementation of a biodigester on P.E.I. may still be a few years away, Thompson emphasized the positive outlook for the initiative. The government is optimistic about the project’s potential to not only address waste management concerns but also contribute to sustainable energy production on the island.
