Extreme weather wreaked havoc in parts of Saskatchewan Tuesday night, causing significant damage. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) confirmed the touchdown of a tornado near the communities of North Portal and Alameda, Sask., located in the southeastern region close to the U.S. border.
According to ECCC meteorologist Dan Fulton, a “strong tornado” was observed on the ground for approximately 20 minutes due to highly conducive atmospheric conditions for severe weather activity. Numerous images and videos circulating on social media depict the extensive devastation caused by the tornado.
In Oxbow, Sask., Laney Loppe witnessed the formation of a large funnel cloud near her residence, prompting her family to seek shelter in the basement as the situation escalated. Despite the imminent threat, their home remained unscathed as the tornado passed by.
Further south in Alameda, Dean Martens had a close encounter with the tornado while working on a fence with his son. Sensing the changing weather conditions and observing unusual behavior in nearby livestock, Martens quickly realized the approaching danger. He vividly described the terrifying experience of witnessing the tornado’s destructive force and the subsequent aftermath.
Meanwhile, storm chaser Craig Boehm captured footage of the tornado as it intensified upon entering Canadian territory. The tornado was reported to have touched down for an extended period, emphasizing the sheer power of nature.
Apart from the tornado, other regions in Saskatchewan experienced severe weather conditions, including hailstorms and heavy rainfall, leading to localized flooding and strong winds. Similar weather disturbances were reported in Manitoba, where hail the size of tennis balls and powerful winds caused significant damage.
As the storm system progressed into Manitoba, the tornado threat subsided, but the line of storms continued to pose risks of further damage. Southern Manitoba encountered intense rainfall, potential tornadoes, and challenging road conditions due to flooding.
The recent weather events serve as a reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the importance of preparedness in the face of such extreme conditions.
