Bell Canada has achieved a significant milestone in its satellite-to-mobile coverage initiative by completing the construction of a ground station in Quebec. The telecommunications company had previously announced a partnership with AST SpaceMobile to provide space-based cellular service using low-earth orbit satellites.
Testing has commenced at the ground station facility to integrate Bell’s terrestrial network with AST SpaceMobile’s satellite constellation for a space-based cellular broadband network. This infrastructure will support direct-to-device satellite service in Canada.
Integration testing, including text messaging, data connectivity, voice calls, and video calls on standard smartphones, has been finalized at the ground station. Further tests for video streaming, public alerts, and additional features are planned in the upcoming weeks.
The purpose of this technology is to ensure connectivity for Bell customers in areas where traditional wireless networks are not accessible, such as northern communities and remote coastal regions. Bell aims to launch its satellite coverage early next year.
Mark McDonald, Bell’s executive vice-president and chief technology officer, emphasized that the satellite ground infrastructure is designed to offer various direct-to-device capabilities, extending connectivity to remote and underserved areas. Chris Ivory, chief commercial officer for AST SpaceMobile, assured customers of a seamless connectivity experience on their smartphones.
Rogers Communications Inc., Bell’s competitor, had previously launched its satellite-to-mobile service in collaboration with SpaceX’s Starlink to connect cellphones in areas with poor coverage. Initial services included text messaging for beta users, with WhatsApp voice and video calling added later. Rogers plans to enable traditional cellphone calls, including 911 services, this year.
The diverse geography of Canada necessitates extending cellular broadband beyond traditional terrestrial infrastructure, as stated by AST SpaceMobile’s Chris Ivory. This initiative aims to provide enhanced connectivity for Canadians across various regions.
