Singer Bonnie Tyler has come out of a coma but remains in critical condition in intensive care, according to an update on her official website. The husky-voiced pop star, aged 75 and a Grammy nominee, was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she resides, for urgent intestinal surgery last month. Subsequently, she was put into a medically induced coma.
Although she is no longer comatose, the statement released on Monday mentioned that Tyler is still “very unwell,” and her recovery process is gradual. Despite this, her medical team is optimistic about her eventual full recovery, emphasizing that it will require time.
Due to her health situation, Tyler’s scheduled performances up to August have been either called off or rescheduled. However, there is hope that her autumn shows will proceed as planned, as mentioned in the statement.
Best known for her 1980s chart-topping power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Tyler, a coal miner’s daughter from Wales, has captured the hearts of many with her music. Her earlier success came in 1978 with “It’s a Heartache,” but it was “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” penned by Jim Steinman, producer and songwriter for Meat Loaf, that solidified her place in music history.
The iconic song continues to attract new fans whenever there is a solar or lunar eclipse, making it a beloved karaoke favorite.
