Marco Carducci, who previously posed a challenge for Halifax Wanderers and their supporters, is now a part of the team. The highly accomplished goalkeeper joined the Canadian Premier League squad during the off-season and is gearing up for their upcoming home opener. After an impressive seven-season stint with Cavalry FC in Calgary, Carducci, known for shutting out the Wanderers eight times and holding a career record of 14-5-7 against them, made the move in December.
Expressing his enthusiasm for a fresh challenge and a new chapter in his career, Carducci shared his thoughts during a training session with the Wanderers in Dartmouth. The 29-year-old has quickly made an impact in his first two away games with the team. He began his tenure by securing a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory against Vancouver FC, earning recognition as the CPL Player of the Week. This was followed by a 2-2 draw against Inter Toronto.
The seasoned Wanderer and team captain, Andre Rampersad, praised Carducci for his immediate contributions both on and off the field. Rampersad highlighted Carducci’s leadership qualities in guiding younger teammates and bringing stability to the team’s defense.
Carducci’s successful tenure with Cavalry FC saw him win the Golden Glove Award twice as the CPL’s top goalkeeper, with the most recent win in 2022 after overcoming testicular cancer. Additionally, he played a crucial role in Cavalry’s triumph as the CPL champion in 2024.
Having garnered interest from European clubs when his contract expired, Carducci, a Canadian of Italian descent, opted for Halifax due to its allure and the club’s strong fan base and culture. The goalkeeper, who has been a professional player since the age of 17, found the prospect of playing in Halifax appealing.
The arrival of Carducci marked a significant change for the Wanderers during the off-season, with several players departing and a new head coach, Vanni Sartini, joining the team. Sartini’s appointment played a role in attracting Carducci to the organization.
Before the season commenced, Carducci made a splash in Halifax with the unveiling of a unique moon mist-themed jersey as part of the team’s kit. The vibrant colors of the jersey, inspired by the Nova Scotian ice cream flavor, resonated with the local community and fans.
Despite the jersey quickly selling out, Carducci admitted he is yet to taste the dessert that inspired his colorful attire. As the Wanderers gear up for their first home game against Pacific FC, Carducci and his teammates are prepared to showcase their skills at the Wanderers Grounds.
