Steelworkers in Hamilton Express Concerns Over Tariffs Impact
The head of a steelworkers union in Hamilton raised concerns over the potential impact of new tariffs threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump on Canadian products. Ron Wells, president of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 1005, highlighted how existing tariffs have already negatively affected Canadian steel sales to the U.S., potentially leading to increased costs and broader repercussions for businesses reliant on steel supplies.
While 50 percent tariffs on steel have been in effect since last year, the exact implications of Trump’s recent announcement to increase levies on steel, automobiles, and auto parts to 50 percent from Jan. 1 remain unclear. Hamilton, housing major steel producers like ArcelorMittal Dofasco and Stelco, alongside various fabricators, could face further challenges due to these tariffs.
Wells, representing about 620 Stelco workers, emphasized a significant slowdown in business activities since the tariffs’ enforcement. The recent imposition of 50 percent U.S. tariffs on $28 billion worth of Canadian goods underscores the escalating trade tensions between the two countries, prompting retaliatory actions from Canada starting Sept. 8.
