Writer-composer Dylan MarcAurele was captivated by the Canadian TV show “Heated Rivalry” and binge-watched the entire series in one go. Intrigued by the queer hockey romance between Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, portrayed by Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, MarcAurele envisioned turning the show into a musical parody.
Prompted by this idea, MarcAurele swiftly penned “Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody,” drawing inspiration from his previous works parodying horror films and reality TV shows. The musical quickly gained traction, transitioning from concert readings to an off-Broadway production set to debut on May 12 in New York.
The musical parody serves as a tribute to the widespread appeal of “Heated Rivalry,” a cultural phenomenon originating from a bestselling book adapted into a popular TV series. With the second season of the show scheduled for April 2027, the musical aims to keep fans engaged with its playful and communal approach.
Featuring energetic and campy numbers infused with ballet-inspired hockey choreography, the musical draws influences from classic showtunes while maintaining a lighthearted tone. Director-producer Alan Kliffer describes the production as a heartfelt homage to the original series, noting the seamless transition from readings to a full-fledged musical as a testament to the show’s growing popularity.
The cast, led by Broadway veterans Jay Armstrong Johnson and Jimin Moon, embraced their roles with enthusiasm, ensuring authenticity in their performances. Armstrong Johnson, in particular, underwent rigorous preparation, including working with a dialect coach to perfect his character’s Russian accent.
Adding a unique twist, the musical introduces a narrator named Susan, a wine mom character played by Ryann Redmond. This addition, while drawing a wider audience to the show, raises questions about the framing of queer narratives with a heterosexual perspective, sparking debate among critics.
As anticipation builds for the off-Broadway premiere, the creative team remains hopeful that the musical will resonate with both dedicated fans and newcomers alike. Kliffer envisions a future where the production travels to Canada, given the show’s Canadian roots and burgeoning international following.
Despite being an unauthorized parody, the team behind the musical hopes to garner support from the original creators and cast members, extending an invitation to them for the opening night. With enthusiastic anticipation surrounding its debut, “Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody” is poised to captivate audiences with its blend of humor, sincerity, and homage to the beloved TV series.
