Italy’s World Cup dreams dashed by Bosnia-Herzegovina

Italy, renowned global soccer champions with four World Cup victories and a current world ranking of 12th, faced a heartbreaking defeat to Bosnia-Herzegovina in a decisive penalty shootout. This loss marks Italy’s third consecutive absence from the prestigious tournament.

Despite an early lead secured by Moise Kean’s goal in the 15th minute, Italy’s chances dwindled after defender Alessandro Bastoni received a red card, leaving them shorthanded. Bosnia-Herzegovina seized the opportunity and equalized with a goal by Haris Tabakovic in the 79th minute. The match extended to extra time and eventually a penalty shootout, where Bosnia triumphed 4-1, earning their ticket to the World Cup.

As a consequence, Bosnia-Herzegovina will be Canada’s opening opponent in Group B for the World Cup on June 12 in Toronto. Other qualifying matches yesterday saw Czechia defeating Denmark, Turkey prevailing over Kosovo, Sweden overcoming Poland, Congo defeating Jamaica, and Iraq securing a win against Bolivia.

Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time comes as a disappointment to both Italian fans and the Italian-Canadian community who anticipated a showdown in Toronto. However, from a Canadian perspective, Italy’s absence might work in favor of the 30th-ranked Canadian team, positioning them as the second strongest team in Group B alongside Switzerland and Qatar.

With home-field advantage for their preliminary matches and an expanded 48-team tournament format allowing for more teams to advance, Canada stands a good chance of progressing to the knockout stage. Despite missing key players like Alphonso Davies, the team is optimistic about their World Cup prospects but acknowledges the challenges ahead.

Head coach Jesse Marsch faces tough decisions as he finalizes his roster ahead of the tournament, emphasizing the need for careful preparation and not underestimating their opponents. The road to the World Cup is paved with uncertainties, and Canada remains focused on the task at hand.
