Canadian swimmer Sydney Pickrem has officially retired from competitive swimming after an illustrious career spanning over a decade with the national team. The 28-year-old, who hails from Florida with Canadian roots from Halifax, marked her retirement following her participation in three Olympic Games. Notably, she clinched a bronze medal in the women’s medley relay event at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Throughout her career, Pickrem achieved remarkable success, securing a total of seven medals at long-course world championships and six at short-course world championships. Her accolades include gold medals in the 200-meter individual medley and the 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the 2021 event in Abu Dhabi. Joining the senior team at the age of 17 in 2014, Pickrem became a key figure during Canada’s golden era in swimming, standing alongside esteemed teammates such as Maggie Mac Neil, Penny Oleksiak, Kylie Masse, and Summer McIntosh.
In the past two seasons, Pickrem has adeptly balanced her training commitments with a coaching position at West Virginia University. Looking ahead, she intends to remain involved in the sport by transitioning into a coaching role.
