“Ontario Cracks Down on Ticket Scalpers Defying Price Caps”

The Ontario government has initiated actions against ticket scalpers and resale platforms to ensure compliance with recent regulations that restrict ticket resale prices to their original face value. Despite some platforms still listing tickets above face value, Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement Stephen Crawford mentioned that inspections are ongoing, targeting various resellers, including ticket brokers and major companies like StubHub and SeatGeek.

The new rule, part of Ontario’s provincial budget, prohibits the selling or facilitation of ticket sales above their initial purchase price. FIFA has responded by withdrawing resale World Cup tickets for upcoming Toronto games, while Ticketmaster has adjusted its site to prevent listings exceeding face value.

This week’s enforcement efforts may involve communication with resellers regarding their practices, requests for records, site visits, and potential enforcement actions like fines. Customers can report concerns about violations to Consumer Protection Ontario, with fines ranging from $3,000 to $250,000 for infractions.

Despite impending enforcement, some companies continue to offer tickets above face value. Platforms like StubHub and SeatGeek display prices significantly higher than the face value, prompting scrutiny from authorities. While these companies claim to be cooperating with the government to comply with the regulations, discrepancies persist in ticket pricing.

Minister Crawford acknowledges the need for companies to adjust their systems for compliance and emphasizes collaboration over punitive measures. However, companies failing to adhere to the rules may face penalties if corrective actions are not taken promptly. Concerns persist about the effective enforcement of price caps, with some experts cautioning that restrictions could drive ticket resales toward unofficial channels, potentially increasing the risk of scams.

While challenges in enforcing the cap exist, experts believe the new rule will help curb excessive ticket reselling practices, though some degree of unauthorized resales may continue. The government aims to reshape consumer expectations and promote fair practices in the ticket resale market.
