“PM Carney: Defectors Align with Liberal Agenda”

Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Members of Parliament who switch to the Liberal caucus align with the party’s agenda. Carney emphasized the diversity of views within the country and highlighted the valuable perspectives and expertise that recent floor-crossers have brought to the government during a press briefing in Contrecoeur, Quebec.

Following the defection of Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu, increasing the Liberals’ seat count to 171, Carney addressed concerns about Gladu’s differing stances from Liberal policies, such as her anti-abortion views, vaccine skepticism, support for the trucker convoy, opposition to cannabis legalization, and reservations about banning conversion therapy. Carney assured that Gladu is expected to support the government on essential matters, including votes related to contentious issues like abortion.

Acknowledging Gladu’s collaborative nature and her extensive experience in the private sector as an engineer and consultant, Carney commended her for her professionalism and ability to work effectively with others.

Carney highlighted that the recent floor-crossers, including MPs from various regions like Nova Scotia, Greater Toronto Area, Edmonton, and Nunavut, are aligned with the Liberal Party’s policy objectives. He emphasized the importance of diverse perspectives in the government and the value of including individuals with different backgrounds and experiences.

When questioned about potential additional defections and red lines for accepting new members, Carney emphasized core Liberal principles, including values of inclusivity, sustainability, and the protection of fundamental rights. He mentioned ongoing discussions with nine MPs considering switching to the Liberal Party, while refraining from speculating on further defections during the Liberal convention in Montreal.

Carney noted that the process of floor-crossing involves preliminary discussions led by other Liberal caucus members, with him joining the conversations toward the end. He expressed readiness to welcome more members if they choose to join the Liberal Party.
