“Remembering Heather: Calls for Change in Healthcare System”

On a rainy evening at the Sessions on the River recording studio in Fort Erie, Ont., a gathering took place to honor Heather Winterstein, whose passing over four years ago has sparked discussions about the treatment of Indigenous individuals and those with mental health and substance use challenges within the healthcare system.

As attendees prepared for a coroner’s inquest into Winterstein’s demise, the event served as a commemoration of the lasting impact the 24-year-old had on those around her. Heather’s aunt, Jill Lunn, emphasized her niece’s humanity and the need for better care for individuals like her.

Winterstein’s tragic story unfolded as she sought medical help at a hospital in late 2021, culminating in her untimely death. Despite her initial visit for severe back pain, where she was sent home with minimal treatment, Winterstein’s condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to her passing in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Her mother, Francine Shimizu-Orgar, shared the anguish of witnessing her daughter’s final moments and revealed Winterstein’s struggles with addiction, juxtaposed with her love for animals and the joy she found in life. The upcoming inquest is poised to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Winterstein’s care, with Shimizu-Orgar urging for accountability and systemic improvements to prevent similar tragedies.

Niagara Health, the hospital where Winterstein sought treatment, acknowledged the shortcomings in her care and committed to addressing issues of bias and racism within the healthcare system. Recognizing the need for cultural safety and inclusivity, the hospital has implemented recommendations to enhance care for marginalized communities.

As the inquest approaches, stakeholders emphasize the importance of confronting systemic racism and discrimination in healthcare to ensure equitable treatment for all individuals. The tragic loss of Heather Winterstein serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Indigenous people and marginalized groups within the healthcare system.
