“Star Blanket Cree Nation Welcomes Bison Back Home”

Residents of Star Blanket Cree Nation experienced a significant event as they witnessed the return of bison to their community after a long absence. The community, located approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Regina, came together over the snowy May long weekend to welcome the arrival of a new bison herd, marking a historic day for their nation.

Among the attendees was Sharon Strongarm, who expressed the emotional impact of the moment as she watched the bison disembark from trucks that had transported them from an Alberta ranch. Strongarm emphasized the spiritual significance of reintroducing the animals, stating, “We’re finally bringing back our buffalo,” highlighting the deep connection to their cultural heritage.

Ariane Starblanket, the community navigator and project manager for the bison release, shared that her late grandfather, a former chief of Star Blanket, had envisioned the return of bison as a means of healing and promoting food sovereignty within the community. This initiative, which initially began as part of community safety plan efforts, evolved into a larger project aimed at engaging youth in caring for the bison and fostering cultural restoration.

The involvement of young community members like Tristan Starr-Desnomie in tending to the bison reflects a generational commitment to preserving and nurturing the herd. Starr-Desnomie expressed his honor in being chosen for this responsibility and highlighted the importance of ensuring the well-being of the animals, particularly during the calving process.

Looking ahead, the community has plans to expand the bison’s habitat on the current 65-hectare land, with the ultimate goal of utilizing the bison as a sustainable resource for food, clothing, and medicine. The return of the bison symbolizes a significant step towards cultural revitalization and empowerment for the people of Star Blanket Cree Nation, inspiring hope for future generations to appreciate the heritage and significance of these majestic creatures.
