An Alberta town has emerged victorious in a national competition, securing $250,000 for repairing its arena. Taber, located east of Lethbridge, was named the winner of the Kraft Hockeyville 2026 competition, triumphing over Tumbler Ridge, B.C., the other finalist. As the champion of the 20th anniversary Hockeyville contest, Taber will receive $250,000 for upgrading its rink facilities and the opportunity to host an NHL pre-season game. Tumbler Ridge, as the runner-up, will receive $100,000.
Additionally, the 11 provincial and territorial finalists will each be awarded $10,000 worth of new hockey equipment for children. Taylor Gouw, president of the Taber Titans Charity and vice-president of the Taber Minor Hockey Association, expressed immense joy upon hearing the news, likening it to winning the Stanley Cup. Simon Laroche, president of Kraft Heinz Canada, emphasized the significance of local rinks as integral community hubs in a post-announcement statement.
The Taber Community Centre faced an explosion last December, rendering it unusable due to a Zamboni ice resurfacer mishap. Following the recent win, the Town of Taber extended gratitude to nationwide voters and local residents affected by the loss of the town’s two rinks. The town acknowledged the community’s resilience and unity in the face of adversity, emphasizing the shared bonds and memories that define their collective spirit.
Since the incident, approximately 250 young hockey players, such as those in the under-nine Taber Oil Kings teams, have had to travel for games and practices. The town emphasized that the competition was about more than just hockey; it symbolized a sense of home, belonging, and cherished memories within the rink’s walls. Looking ahead, Gouw eagerly anticipates the renovated Taber Community Centre hosting the NHL pre-season game.
Furthermore, Taber commended runner-up Tumbler Ridge for their resilience and community spirit, particularly in light of recent challenges. The town expressed solidarity with Tumbler Ridge and praised their remarkable second-place finish in the competition.
