WestJet has announced a special offer for passengers holding flights between July 30 and Aug. 4. They can now make a one-time change or cancel their bookings without any additional fees. The airline based in Calgary introduced this policy to provide travelers with more flexibility and confidence in their travel plans amid an ongoing labor dispute with flight attendants.
The recent vote by WestJet flight attendants, with a 99.4% majority in favor of a strike, means that approximately 4,400 union members represented by CUPE Local 8125 may go on strike legally starting Aug. 2. WestJet assured its customers that they believe a resolution can be achieved without causing disruptions to guests, but acknowledge the concerns surrounding travel uncertainties.
CUPE 8125 president Alia Hussain expressed gratitude towards WestJet’s decision, acknowledging the uncertainty passengers may be facing due to the labor dispute. She emphasized the importance of providing flexibility to passengers during such times. While Hussain clarified that the airline’s action does not confirm an impending strike, she commended it as a responsible measure that any business would take in the given circumstances.
WestJet faced a significant labor dispute back in the summer of 2024 when unionized airline mechanics went on strike over the Canada Day long weekend, impacting tens of thousands of travelers. The airline reaffirmed its commitment to negotiating in good faith and finding solutions that benefit the cabin crew while ensuring the future sustainability of WestJet.
