Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson have bounced back from their disappointing performance at the beach volleyball world championships with a strong showing at the Saquarema Elite tournament in Brazil. The Canadian duo secured a silver medal as they were defeated by Taryn Brasher and Kristen Cruz of the United States, with a score of 21-15, 21-15 in the final match.
Cruz emphasized the importance of trust between her and Brasher on the court, highlighting their belief in each other’s abilities and training. The Americans managed to outscore Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson in attacks, blocks, and points gained from their opponents’ errors.
Brasher and Cruz have been dominant in Brazilian tournaments, winning their fourth gold medal in nine events, all held in different cities. Their victory in Saquarema marked their twelfth medal in the last 15 international competitions.
For the Toronto pair of Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson, this tournament loss was their first, following a defeat in the quarterfinals of the world championships. Despite the setback, the Canadians, who are Olympic silver medalists, see this as a learning opportunity to improve their game.
In the semifinals, Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson avenged their loss by beating a Brazilian team in a tough match. They expressed appreciation for the challenging competition and the passionate atmosphere in Brazil.
The Brazilian duo settled for fourth place after losing the bronze-medal match against Switzerland. The Beach Pro Tour’s next Elite event is scheduled to take place in Brasilia from April 29 to May 3.
