The majority of federal funding allocated to Base Gagetown is designated for enhancing the training range and constructing essential infrastructure for an air defense system. Prime Minister Mark Carney recently unveiled a budget of over $1 billion for the 5th Canadian Support Base Gagetown as part of the government’s military revitalization strategy. Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc provided a breakdown of the expenditure plans, revealing that approximately $172 million will be used to establish infrastructure to accommodate equipment required for the new air defense system, crucial in modern combat scenarios.
Minister LeBlanc emphasized the significance of the air defense system in countering threats such as rockets, artillery, missiles, and bombs. However, the primary focus of the funding will be on reconfiguring Gagetown’s training facilities and range, with an estimated cost of around $871 million, as stated in a National Defence press release. This initiative involves repairing base roads, upgrading training areas, and constructing a new medical center to enhance the base’s operational capabilities.
Furthermore, the federal government has committed $20.2 million towards renovating a large facility for transitional services to aid departing military personnel and their families in transitioning to civilian life. Construction of this center commenced in 2024, with completion anticipated last month. Minister LeBlanc highlighted the importance of providing high-quality support services to military members as they transition to the next phase of their lives.
In addition to these developments, Prime Minister Carney announced earlier that part of the funding will go towards constructing new housing units on the base. David Myles, MP for Fredericton-Oromocto, revealed plans to build 650 units, with the provincial government likely engaging local modular-home builders for the project. Housing construction is expected to be one of the initial undertakings, with aims to commence during the upcoming construction season.
