A former Riverview basketball coach imprisoned for filming players and distributing illicit images has been granted a two-month temporary release by the Parole Board of Canada. Shawn Curtis Nickerson, serving a nine-year sentence, secured approval for a 60-day unescorted absence focused on personal development for rehabilitation purposes. In April 2021, Nickerson received his sentence after pleading guilty to 32 charges, which included activities related to child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
The parole board has outlined specific conditions for Nickerson’s leave, requiring him to reside in a halfway house. Although the exact location within Canada for his stay was not disclosed, local law enforcement has expressed support for the arrangement. The Correctional Service of Canada, overseeing prisons, endorsed the plan, emphasizing its potential to enable Nickerson to apply acquired skills in a non-institutional setting.
During the sentencing proceedings, it was revealed that Nickerson utilized hidden cameras to record minors aged 12 to 16 in various locations, such as hotel bathrooms and gym locker rooms. An international investigation into online images linked back to Nickerson, who had amassed numerous videos starting in 2016. The court identified 21 victims in his recordings, with additional individuals remaining unidentified.
A psychological evaluation conducted in July 2025 classified Nickerson as a low general reoffending risk but an above-average risk for sexual reoffense. Nickerson’s statutory release is scheduled for April 9, 2027, mandating his transition to the community to complete the remainder of his sentence. The parole board’s decision highlighted Nickerson’s expression of remorse and commitment to societal reintegration during the hearing.
Throughout his temporary release, Nickerson must adhere to stringent conditions, including avoiding contact with children or victims, obtaining approval for internet-connected devices, and undergoing supervised internet usage. The board believes the established release plan and conditions form a comprehensive risk management strategy to minimize the risk of reoffending.
