Paul Langlois reflects on The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, a decade after the event, expressing that he is still processing the experience. Langlois, the band’s guitarist, shared his sentiments in an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner on “The National” on Thursday evening.
The emotional farewell concert in Kingston featured lead singer Gord Downie bidding adieu to a packed audience at Rogers K-Rock Centre (now known as Slush Puppi Place) and viewers nationwide. Downie’s poignant rendition of hits like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” marked the end of an era for The Hip.
The iconic Canadian band, formed in 1984 and renowned for their 13 studio albums, concluded their touring journey in 2016 with a memorable hometown show on August 20. Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, sadly led to his passing at the age of 53 a year later.
To honor the 10th anniversary of this significant event, CBC will rebroadcast The Tragically Hip’s final concert on Saturday. Guitarist Rob Baker expressed gratitude for the enduring impact the band’s music has had on fans and their dedication to remembering Gord’s legacy.
Langlois recounted feeling a mix of emotions before the final performance, with initial discomfort giving way to a lighter mood upon encountering Downie’s infectious optimism during soundcheck. Baker emphasized his role in supporting Downie’s vision for the tour, despite the emotional challenges he faced.
While concerns initially lingered about Downie’s health affecting his stage presence, the band members witnessed his physical improvement throughout the farewell tour. Reflecting on the unexpected magnitude of their last show, Langlois admitted that the band was taken aback by the widespread outpouring of support and remembrance.
Despite fans’ hopes for a reunion, Baker and Langlois emphasized that The Tragically Hip will not be reuniting. However, the band recently released a new album, “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” featuring recordings from the 2016 tour. Baker acknowledged the healing power of music, citing a personal moment of emotional release facilitated by a musical connection with Downie.
