“Auston Matthews Takes Blame for Leafs’ Disappointing Season”

Auston Matthews made an appearance wearing a brace on his surgically repaired left knee and took responsibility for a disappointing season, both for himself and his team. During the end-of-season media availability for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Matthews expressed empathy for the fans and gratitude for their support. However, when questioned about his future with the team, Matthews mentioned uncertainties due to potential changes in leadership and management.

The Maple Leafs, who were Atlantic Division champions in the previous season, faced a drastic decline this year, missing the playoffs for the first time in Matthews’s career. Matthews himself experienced a decrease in performance, scoring 27 goals and amassing 53 points in 60 games, compared to 78 points in the previous season and a remarkable 69-goal season two years ago.

Acknowledging the challenges faced, Matthews commented, “We didn’t meet the goals or the expectations that we set out at the start, and ultimately, that’s on me.” The team made changes during the season by firing assistant coach Marc Savard in December and letting go of general manager Brad Treliving in March. The absence of key players like Mitch Marner and various injuries further impacted the team’s performance.

While head coach Craig Berube is optimistic about his return next season, the team’s future leadership will determine his fate. Berube highlighted the team’s defensive struggles as a primary reason for their downfall, as the Maple Leafs ranked poorly in goals against and shots against per game this season compared to the previous one.

Matthews’s season-ending knee injury, resulting from a hit by Anaheim defenceman Radko Gudas, added to the team’s challenges. Despite the setbacks, confidence in a rebound next season remains strong among the Leafs, with players emphasizing the need for improvement in various areas. As the team looks towards making changes to avoid another disappointing campaign, trade rumors involving Morgan Rielly have surfaced, potentially leading to adjustments in the team composition. Rielly expressed his desire to stay with the Maple Leafs, emphasizing his attachment to the organization and his commitment to the team.
