“Artemis II Astronauts Inspire Nation on Canadian Tour”

Prime Minister Mark Carney warmly greeted the Artemis II astronauts upon their arrival in Ottawa, commending their recent journey around the moon as a source of inspiration for the entire nation. During a meeting in his office, Carney emphasized the valuable lessons in teamwork, dedication, courage, and human ingenuity demonstrated by the astronauts, highlighting that their mission symbolizes just the beginning of great achievements. He expressed gratitude for their accomplishments and the motivation they have instilled in the Canadian populace.

The Artemis II crew, comprising Canadian astronauts Jeremy Hansen and back-up Jenni Gibbons alongside NASA astronauts Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialist Christina Koch, is engaging in a series of engagements in Ottawa and Montreal from Wednesday to Friday to share insights from their mission.

While in Canada, the astronauts are participating in various public events, engaging with students, interacting with stakeholders in the Canadian space sector, and conducting a limited number of interviews. The Artemis II mission, which involved the crew orbiting the moon and returning to Earth after departing on April 1, marked a significant milestone as they ventured farther from our planet than any previous human explorers. This mission serves as NASA’s initial step towards future crewed missions to Mars.

Acknowledging the risks involved, Carney emphasized that the mission was undertaken to pave the way for even greater opportunities. Hansen expressed his delight at being welcomed by Canadians in Ottawa after their space expedition, noting that the mission showcases Canada’s capabilities on the global stage. He presented Carney with a framed maple leaf patch that accompanied the crew on their journey, symbolizing their shared achievements.

In a public event at the National Arts Centre (NAC) in Ottawa, the crew discussed the significance of humanity’s return to the moon and fielded questions from children in attendance. Hansen reflected on the crew’s unity and perseverance during challenging moments, drawing parallels to the importance of strong relationships in today’s world. The crew later engaged in further discussions at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que., alongside parliamentarians and other key stakeholders.

Overall, the Artemis II astronauts’ visit to Canada serves as a testament to the spirit of exploration, collaboration, and determination that drives space exploration endeavors.
