“Tick Alert: Public Health Urges Check After Outdoor Activities”

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health has issued updated recommendations regarding tick encounters, advising the public to conduct tick checks after being outdoors in temperatures exceeding 0 C. Phil Wong, the health unit’s health protection operations director, mentioned that tick sightings have expanded beyond wooded areas based on data collected through a surveillance program where individuals reported encountering ticks in various locations.

The three primary areas where ticks are commonly found include parks, trails, camping sites with tall grass, private properties, and occupational settings for outdoor workers. Wong highlighted that individuals have reported encountering ticks while gardening or raking leaves at home, emphasizing the importance of conducting thorough tick checks.

Although the likelihood of encountering ticks on playgrounds is low due to their preference for damp, shaded areas, parents are advised to check their children for ticks after outdoor activities. Health experts anticipate a rise in tick populations in Canada, with over 40 tick species identified in the country, some of which can transmit diseases like Lyme disease and trigger allergies.

To address the increasing tick concerns, the Canadian Tick Research and Innovation Centre at Acadia University and the G Magnotta Lyme Disease Research Lab at the University of Guelph have been established for in-depth research on ticks and tick-borne illnesses. Justin Wood, a Lyme disease survivor and scientist, emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and intervention for tick-related illnesses.

Despite the growing risk of encountering ticks, the public is encouraged to report tick sightings online to aid in tracking their spread. While enjoying outdoor activities, individuals are reminded to remain vigilant, conduct tick checks, and not be deterred from outdoor recreation. The health unit emphasizes the importance of taking preventive measures while enjoying the outdoors during warmer weather conditions.
